PARENT'S MEETING 9.26.2024, 7PM @ MBE 〰️

DID YOU KNOW MOUNTAIN BROOK HAD A MOUNTAIN BIKING TEAM?

Who can join?

Anyone zoned for the Mountain Brook School System grades 6th through 12th can join our team.

Can girls join?

Yes!!! Having girls on our team is a priority for the Mountain Brook team and for the Alabama Cycling Association. We usually have several female coaches and would love to see more girls racing with us!

Is mountain biking an expensive sport?

The annual costs to for team and league dues generally run about $625, including league fees (covering insurance and league staff/administration), running the 6 race weekends) and team fees (covers equipment, team trailer, food, and coach expenses). We encourage our riders to look for opportunities to buy less expensive or used bikes when first trying out the sport, but if they love the sport an upgrade to a higher-quality bike could appear on their radar. Maintenance, cycling apparel and electronics are a few other items to factor in to upfront and recurring costs. However, compared to the costs for many other travel sports, we feel mountain biking is very reasonable.

what are the races like?

The league races are a lot of fun! Teams from around the State of Alabama gather for 6 weekends each spring. The Pit Zone area where each team sets up their tents. You’ll head out along the trails to cheer on your teammates, and enjoy the festival-like atmosphere that culminates in the awards ceremony at the end of the day. Most importantly - Everyone can participate in the races. There is no sitting on the bench waiting for a chance to race!

What if i have another spring sport?

Having another spring sport can work with our schedule; we have riders who play other sports and only make it to some of the races but still really enjoy racing and being a part of our team.

why mountain biking?

Mountain Biking is a sport that we believe anyone can enjoy and can participate in now and for a lifetime. Our team brings a fun and competitive opportunity to youth in grades 6-12, where we will work to develop biking skills, community, leadership and all-around excellence through teamwork.

it’s for everyone

Mountain Biking is a sport that any rider can enjoy. Both our practices and races are geared around making it fun for every level of rider.

COACHES

Our Head Coach is Bill Andrews (aka “Mr Andrews” if you’re a student at MBE). Bill has been coaching since the Alabama league began. We also have several parents who are assistant coaches who have completed the required curriculum. If you’re a parent who enjoys riding, let us know if you’d be interested in becoming a coach! 2024 Coaches included Alex Seligson, Turner Inscoe, Krys Barrett and Brian Barrett

TEAM BACKGROUND

While the sport of mountain biking has been around since the 1980’s, the organized competitive sport for Middle School and High School Youth is relatively young. Since 2015, teams in Alabama have competed as a part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). Beginning in the 2022-2023 Season, our state has formed its own league called the Alabama Cycling Association. This organization will run the race season much as they have been run in the past with the same staff, locations and other elements that have made the Alabama race season so great.

Our team began with riders on the Red Mountain Composite Team, a group made up of athletes from all around the metro area that attend different schools but compete together. The MB contingent grew and, once we had enough riders from the Mountain Brook School system, we formed our own team (2020-2021 Season). We are only in our third year but growing and had a slate of 15 riders last year!
